Eric Hale ~ Iowa Archery Whitetail

Well, with all the luck that Chris, Mark and Mike had in Iowa, Eric was super excited to fill his tag on a buck that Iowa is famous for. Polar opposite to their hunt, little did Eric know how hard taking a mature buck was going to be over the remainder of the Iowa hunt. Eric immediately began seeing some great bucks, but had a particular Giant 10 the LOF Clan named "High Ball"on his mind and was committed to getting a shot at him. For 11 days, Eric and Chris grinded in one of the toughest ruts either of them had ever hunted and had completely been beaten up by the Giant 10 they were after. With only 2 days left to hunt, Eric decided it was time to push the panic button and he knew it was time to make something happen. With nagging Southern winds, Eric and Chris went to a deep draw between corn fields hoping to catch a mature buck with a doe or a cruising. After hanging their LoneWolfs in the dark, the boys jumped in the stand for yet another long slow sit. Finally after two hours on stand Chris caught a glimpse of a big mature 10 point pushing a doe in their direction. But, he stopped short after 100 yards and began working her back in the opposite direction. At this point, Eric was all in and the boys became super aggressive and devised a plan to fill his Iowa bow tag. Their was enough wind that the boys felt like they might actually haveĀ a chance at stalking the big buck and so the stalk began. 1 hour later, the Virginia boys worked to within 70 yards of the buck and by this time another buck had joined the party. After a tense stand off, the two bucks got into a fight and the big 10 eventually won. All of the excitement gave Eric and Chris the chance they needed to get a little closer. As if Eric's prayers had been answered, the big 10 gave him a 64 yard shot and Eric made good on it putting the arrow right behind the shoulder. And the rest as they say is history. Eric says that this was his most difficult rut hunt ever and he could not have been more excited to have ended it on such a high note. WOW, what a two weeks for LOF in Iowa.
